How can I get a marriage certificate in Nigeria?

Step 1

The first step you would need to take if you want to have a marriage certificate in Nigeria is to go to any marriage registry and make them know that you wish to get married. There are different registries in Nigeria and you can either choose to go to a state registry or a federal registry.

Step 2

When you get to the registry, you will have to fill a form. it is very important to fill this form as it will show that your intention to get married. This form is called a Notice form which is also known as a Form A.

Step 3

The next step you need to take once you are done filling the form is to submit that form with your passports, two passports to be specific. It should be noted that your passport must be colored. This Notice form which you have filled will then be posted on the Notice board for a period of 21 days. The notice of your intention to get marriage will then put into the Marriage notice book of the registry.

Step 4

Once your notice has expired, you would have a to pay a fee which will be determined by the registry and the registrar will then give you a form c if you have met the standard and you are good to go.

Here is a list of the standards you would have to meet:

  1. One of the couple must stay or live in the district where the marriage is supposed to be celebrated.
  2. None of the couple should be under 21 years old and if any is under that age, there must be an affidavit with permission from the bride to be’s parent or any other legal guardian
  3. There must not be any unlawful hindrance to the marriage
  4. None of the couple should be legally married to any other person

Step 5

The next step you would need to take after this is to swear an affidavit. This affidavit must be sworn before the registrar or any recognized religion minister. If any violates the rules, there is a penalty attached.

Step 6

Once all of these have been fulfilled, the minister will then give the notice and also issue the certificate and also give his or her license. This is known as form D. after this, the couple will then chooses a wedding date and this wedding date must be within 3 months

Step 7

This is the final stage which is the wedding day. The wedding is always no longer than half an hour. On this day, the registrar will then print the marriage certificates as form e.
