Life style is made up of two distinct and separate words ‘’life’’ and ‘’style’’. ‘‘Life’’ in simple terms means the existence of an individual human being or animal, while the latter in clear essence mean a particular procedure by which something is done ‘‘a manner or way’’

Merging these two words together gives a different meaning which can be attained by combining the words ‘‘life’’ and ‘’style’’.

  1. LIFESTYLE

Lifestyle in simple terms is the interest, opinions, behaviours and behavioural orientations of an individual, group or culture. The above definition suggest that lifestyle can also be an attribute of any other entity and not just an individual.

A more comprehensive definition of lifestyle can be put as a  way of living of individuals, families[households] and societies which they manifest in coping with their physical, psychological, social and economic environments on a day-to-day basis

Lifestyle is expressed in both work and leisure behaviour patterns and [on an individual basis] in activities, attitudes, interests, opinions, values, and allocation of income. It also reflects people’s self-image or self-concept; the way they see themselves and believe they are seen by the others

A broader overview of lifestyle refers to an all-round aspect of an individual, group, culture etc

Lifestyle is a composite of motivations, needs and wants and is influenced by factors such as culture, family, reference groups and social class

  1. DETERMINANTS OF LIFESTYLE

There are so many things that determines an individual, group or cultures’ lifestyle. These determinant could affect or influence a lifestyle. There are;

  1. Environment
  2. Social economic status
  3. Level of education
  4. Culture and beliefs
  5. Relationship with self
  6. Relationship with others
  7. Personality type
  8. Peer influence
  9. Political influence
  10. Human biology
  11. Age
  12. Sex

It should be noted that lifestyle is not limited to these determinants

 

  1. TYPES OF LIFESTYLE

There are two basic types of lifestyle which are

  1. Good/healthy lifestyle
  2. Bad/unhealthy lifestyle

GOOD/HEALTHY LIFESTYLE: what does it mean to be healthy? Healthy means being in a good physical or mental condition [indicating or promoting good health]. It is important that an entity has or lives a good lifestyle on order to function properly and optionally some examples of healthy lifestyles are;

  • Dieting
  • Avoid smoking
  • Fitness
  • Following a to do list
  • Emotional intelligence

BAD/UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLE: This type of lifestyle is the reverse of an ‘’Healthy’’ lifestyle. It is said to be unhealthy because it does not promote good health. It can also be inferred that this kind of lifestyle does not allow an entity function properly and optimally. Some examples of unhealthy lifestyles are;

  • Smoking
  • Unhealthy food
  • Passive rest
  • Laziness
  • Too much sugar
  • Unhealthy life schedule
  1. ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCE ON LIFESTYLE;

Since the earliest times, humans have the need to be sensitive to their surroundings to survive, which means that we have an innate awareness of our environment and seek out environment with certain qualities.

The two basic type of environment that influences and shapes human lifestyle are the rural environment and urban environment. This comprises of type of people we associate with, the level of education one attains and the economic status of the individual or family

A rural environment has different lifestyles compared to an urban metropolis. The nature of the neighbourhood in which a person resides affects the set of lifestyles available to that person due to differences between various neighbourhoods’ degrees or affluence and proximity to natural and cultural environments.

  1. HOW TO LIVE THE ‘’BEST’’ LIFESTYLE;

The best lifestyle is one that allows an individual, group or culture performs at its highest capable ability. The ideal lifestyle is possible.

Steps to live the best lifestyle has been identified as;

  1. Define the ideal lifestyle
  2. Eliminate the unnecessary
  3. Find what works best for you
  4. Build a few keystone habits
  5. Find your passion
  6. Make it your job
  7. Decide what time you want to spend working
  8. Travel often
  9. Have hobbies
  10. Be always on the go
  11. Always be open for new things
  12. Give and be grateful.
