List Of Nigerian Presidents From 1960 Till Date

Nigeria attained independence in the year 1960 and ever since then has had a number of presidents and heads of state. Many Nigerians do not even know some of the past presidents, to this end; I have prepared a valid list of all the Nigerian presidents that have ruled Nigeria from when it gained independence 1960 till date.

It should be noted that Nigeria has gone from military rule from a long period of time to civilian rule. 1. Nnamdi Azikiwe

Nnamdi Benjamin Azikiwe, PC (16 November 1904 – 11 May 1996), Nnamdi Azikiwe is usually referred to as “Zik”, he  was a Nigerian statesman and political leader who served as the first President of Nigeria from 1963 to 1966. Considered a driving force behind the nation’s independence, he is popularly known as the “father of Nigerian.

2. Johnson Aguyi Ironsi

General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi MVO, MBE (3 March 1924 – 29 July 1966) was a Nigerian Army general who was the first Military Head of State of Nigeria. He was assassinated  by the bloody coup de etat in 1966.

3. General Yakubu Gowon

Yakubu “Jack” Gowon (born 19 October 1934). General Yakubu Gowon is a Nigerian political and military leader who served as the head of state of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975.

4. General Murtala Mohammed

General Murtala Muhammed (8 November 1938 – 13 February 1976) was a Nigerian Army general. General Murtala Muhammed was the 4th Head of State of Nigeria from 1975  until his death in 1976. He is said to be the only head of state that ruled for a very short period.

5. Major-General Olusegun Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR.  Major-General Olusegun Obasanjo was born on.5 March 1937.  Major-General Olusegun Obasanjo is a Nigerian military and political leader who served as military head of state from 1976 to 1979

6. Shehu Shagari

Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari GCFR (February 25, 1925 – December 28, 2018) was a Nigerian statesman. He was the first President of Nigeria who was democratically elected, after the transfer of power by military head of state General Olusegun Obasanjo in 1979 giving birth to the Second Nigerian Republic.

7. Major-General Muhammadu Buhari

Major General Muhammadu Buhari GCFR was born 17 December 1942. he is a retired general of the Nigerian Army and he also served as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.

8. General Ibrahim Babangida

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida KGCB GCFR was born 17 August 1941. He is  popularly known as IBB,  General Ibrahim Babangida is a Nigerian general and statesman that served as military President of Nigeria from 1985 until his resignation in 1993. It should be noted that he also served as the Chief of Army Staff from January 1984 to August 1985. General Ibrahim Babangida played an important role in Nigerian politics.

9. Ernest Shonekan

Oloye Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan was born 9 May 1936 is a Nigerian statesman, lawyer and businessman that was appointed as the interim president of Nigeria by general Ibrahim Babangida on 26 August 1993.

10. General Sani Abacha

General Sani Abacha GCFR was born on  20 September 1943 . He died on 8 June 1998. General Sani Abacha  was a Nigerian military general, and a dictator who served as the military head of state of Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998.

11. General Abdulsalami Abubakar

General Abdulsalami Abubakar was born on  June 13, 1942. General Abdulsalami Abubakar is a Nigerian statesman and military general who served as the de facto President of Nigeria from 1998 to 1999. General Abdulsalami Abubaka  was also the Chief of Defence Staff between 1993 to 1998. He succeeded General Sani Abacha when he died.

12. Olusegun Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo, GCFR was born on 5 March 1937.Chief Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo was a Nigerian military and political leader who served as military head of state from 1976 to 1979 and  he later served as the President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. Ideologically, he is a Nigerian nationalist and he was a member of the People’s Democratic Party.

13. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was born on16 August 1951. He died on 5 May 2010.  Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was a Nigerian politician who was the President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010. He was declared the winner of the controversial Nigerian presidential election that was  held on 21 April 2007, and he was sworn in on 29 May 2007. He died while in power.

14. Goodluck Jonathan

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan GCFR, GCON (born 20 November 1957) is a Nigerian politician who served as the President of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. He lost the 2015 presidential election to former military head of state General Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently the president of Nigeria. This marks the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost re-election and accepted defeat. Before that, he had served as the Vice President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010; and also in a state rich in oil ” Bayelsa State”  as the  Governor of Bayelsa State from 2005 to 2007.

15. Muhammadu Buhari

Muhammadu Buhari GCFR was born on 17 December 1942.  Muhammadu Buhari is a Nigerian politician who has been president of Nigeria since 2015. Muhammadu Buhari is also a retired general of the Nigerian Army and has served as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.
