On September 5, 2015, Nnamdi Kanu delivered the keynote address at the World Igbo Congress in Los Angeles, when he said, “We need guns and we need bullets.” To protect himself against Fulani herdsmen assaults on Igbos, Kanu said in an interview with CNN dated June 2017 that he was seeking ammunition and firearms from a Nigerian organization in the United States for self-defence.

However, civil disobedience has been the primary method used by Kanu to press home his demand for the liberation of his people.
