On eighth June, 1961 the Law accommodating the foundation of the Provisional Council of the University was officially introduced under the Chairmanship of Chief Rotimi Williams.

This Provisional Council has since been supplanted by a Governing Council.

The University began with five Faculties – Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Social investigations (presently Social Sciences), Law and Science. Six new Faculties have since been included, in particular the Faculty of Education (built up on first October, 1967), the Faculty of Pharmacy (set up on first October, 1969), the Faculties Technology and Health Sciences (presently College of Health Sciences) (both set up on first October, 1960), Faculty of Administration with impact from first October 1979) and Faculty of Environmental Design and Management (set up on April 6, 1982).
