Right from the days of independence, Nigeria has experienced a number of political problems which has consequently led to the slow development of our dear nation. If these problem are not corrected in time, it might lead Nigeria into becoming a failed state.

In this article, I have careful listed some of the political problems militating against the growth of our country as well as how to improve them.

List Of Political Problems In Nigeria

1. CORRUPTION

One of the political problems militating against the growth of the country is Corruption. In Nigeria today, corruption has become the order of the day. In fact, Nigeria is labeled as one of the most corrupt countries we have in the world. The major cause of corruption has to be greed. Many government officials steal public funds. Personally, I have discovered that corruption open doors for more political problems in Nigeria such as incompetence of government workers and so on.

2. TRIBALISM

Another political problem we have in Nigeria militating against the growth of the country is tribalism. This problem has eaten deep into almost every politician in Nigeria today. Every day we see people preach one Nigeria but they do not put it into practice. Tribalism has caused more harm than good in our dear country. It is one of the reasons why Nigeria is not stable as a country. In fact, the voting process is no longer fair because almost everybody wants to vote in someone just because he or she is from their tribe and not because he is the best man for the job.

Some government official even favor incompetent people to work for the government just because he or she is from the same tribe even though it should be on merit.

3. INCOMPETENCE OF GOVERNMENT WORKERS

Another political problem we have in Nigeria militating against the growth of the country is incompetence of government workers. I said earlier that one of the cause of this is corruption. Corruption makes one that is not fit for a governmental position get hired at the expense of professionals. Hence, when real life situations face them, they are not able to handle them.

Solutions to political problems in Nigeria

1. Proper tracking of money

As a solution to the political problems we have in Nigeria, proper record of money or public funds should be done to avoid money laundering by greedy politicians.

2. Awareness of harm of causing tribal division

One of the solutions of political problems in Nigeria is awareness of the harm of causing tribal division. Many people do not even know the harm they do when they become too tribal and as such, proper awareness should be done. Even though it cannot be eradicated, it would be reduced in a good measure.

3. A strict merit system should be adopted

In order to avoid more incompetent government officials in the future, a strict merit system should be put in place. With this, it would also be impossible to favor someone who does not fit the criteria of a position in the government.
