Problems Facing Healthcare Management In Nigeria

1.   CORRUPTION

One of the problems that have successfully affected almost all the systems in Nigeria and Nigeria’s progress at large is Corruption. I have identified corruption as one of the biggest problems of the Nigeria healthcare system. This problem is linked with all the people in power and in control of the healthcare system in Nigeria. This can simply be shown as the government not paying the right salaries that are supposed to be paid to the workers in the healthcare system simply because the money has been embezzled or gone to something else.

The doctors and the nurses are the people that to an extent save lives in Nigeria but sadly, they are not even paid for the job that they do. This problem can simply be solved if the government tries to pay the government more for the services that they offer so that they would also be motivated to do more for the healthcare system and Nigeria at large.

2.   INCOMPETENT NURSES

Another problem that has faced the healthcare system in Nigeria is not having competent nurses in the healthcare system. The healthcare system is quite one of the systems in Nigeria that is very sensitive and I do not know why we do not have competent nurses in this system. We have had cases of patients sustaining serious injuries or complication and even most times death due to the carelessness of the nurses that we have in the healthcare system. More than half of the time the patient has to stay in the clinic, he or she is under the care of the nurse and this is why nurses in the clinic should be well trained for the rapid healing of patients. Again, it has come to our notice that many of the nurses that we have in Nigeria do not even portray empathy as regards the patients.

Empathy in simple terms means one putting yourself in the shoes of your patients which many nurses obviously do not possess as they are very rude. Empathy is very important psychologically to the patient as this would help him or her heal quickly.

3.   LACK OF PROPER FUNDING

Another problem that has faced the Nigerian healthcare system for years is the problem of lack of proper funding. This particular problem has faced many of the systems in Nigeria and that is why they are not working like they are supposed to be. Lack of proper funding of the medical system in Nigeria has caused many deaths in Nigeria which could have been of course avoided. We have has instances of one being transferred or rejected in a particular hospital because they do not even have enough space of equipment to treat the individual properly. This problem is caused by the corruption that we talked about earlier.

4.   LACK OF PROPER MEDICAL FACILITIES

Another problem that has faced the Nigerian healthcare system for years is lack of proper medical facilities. This problem has also caused the deaths of some patients in Nigeria also which could have been avoided. In Nigeria, we do not possess enough sophisticated medical equipment that can be used to treat patients which is why many of the people in Nigeria run to other countries to be treated.

Another problem that has faced the Nigerian healthcare system for years is the problem of quack doctors. Even if there are well trained doctors in Nigeria, there are still a number of quack doctors in Nigeria which has impeded the growth of the healthcare system in Nigeria,

6.   BAD MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES

Another problem that has faced the Nigerian healthcare system for years is the problem of bad management of resources. It is one thing not to have enough resources for a system and it is another thing to proper manage the limited resources which one has. The healthcare system in Nigeria does not have a proper management system to properly monitor and the limited resources that it has.

7.   LACK OF MEDICATIONS

Another problem that has faced the Nigerian healthcare system for years is problem of lack of medications. This particular problem is a very serious problem, there are many hospitals that are in Nigeria in which they do n0ot even have a pharmacy where one can purchase the drugs which the doctor has prescribed. You might have noticed this if you have visited some of the hospitals we have in Nigeria, they can prescribe drugs for you and ask you to go and buy it outside, this can be problem if you cannot get the drug which the doctor has prescribed.
