1. Poor Infrastructure
First on our list is Poor Infrastructure and this is because, with the right infrastructure set in place, agriculture itself can grow, if the roots are not properly built then this can affect the agriculture system. Poor Infrastructure remains a critical problem in the agriculture sector today.
2. Education And Modernization
Next on our list is Education And Modernization. Modernization remains a very crucial problem in the agriculture system too. Many of these rural areas do not have the necessary farming tools to help them cultivate farm products properly, thereby limiting the groth of the agriculture system.
3. Government Policies
Some of government policies too have affected the agriculture system too, policies like tax and so on has been a huge problem in the agriculture system.
One of the factors distorting the growth of agriculture in Nigeria is illiteracy, many Nigerian farmers lack formal education and this has affected the sector greatly.
Many youths do not even have an idea of how profitable the agriculture system is, as many youths look into going for white collar jobs than to go into agriculture, despite the scarcity of white collar jobs in the country. If many youths after their university education decide to go into agriculture, the agriculture system will grow but then it is greatly overlooked and ignored by the Nigerian citizens.
6. Lack Of Funds
Insufficient financial support can also be a huge problem facing the agriculture system. Lack of funds constitutes a major setback to the development of the agricultural sector in Nigeria. To be a very successful farmer, you need a good capital and enough funds on you.
7. Absence Of Processing Facilities
A huge number of food crops produced in Nigeria are perishable foods and studies show that about 80% of foods produced by Nigerian farmers go bad due to lack of storage facilities like silos, silage, barns and so on.
8. Natural Disaster
Natural disaster can also be a problem affecting agriculture. Like the recent flooding in Bayelsa and Benue and other parts of the country, where flooding has totally caused disaster in the agricultural sector. Among all other problems of agriculture, this is the most natural and devastating because there is little or no control over it.
9. Access To Land And Fertilizers
Another problem facing the agriculture sector is the accessing lands for expanding farm is difficult in Nigeria. Many farmers just have a piece of land to the farm which leaves them with no much land to farm on, as they can’t farm on the same piece of land because farming on the same land can cause land degradation and make these lands lose its nutrients and they become unproductive.
This is the most recent problem facing the agriculture sector today in our country. Many farmers have been facing insecurities on their farm lands and products, even many have decided to stay away from their farm because they are living with fear and this has caused increase in price of food materials and products. Some farmers have even lost their lives in the past years in a bid to protect their farm from the attack of herdsmen.
