Understanding Top, Middle And Base Notes In Perfume
Like a musical composition, perfume is made up of singular notes that harmonize together to create an aromatic symphony. Every note has a purpose, and every note evokes a feeling. Rather than simply listing the oils as ingredients in our Natural Perfume, we organized them into the three categories of notes present in perfume. Seeing which aromas are in the top, middle, and base notes can help you anticipate what the experience of wearing a perfume will be like.
Also referred to as headnotes, top notes are the first impression of a perfume. It’s these first notes that either draw you into an aroma or push you away. The oils that are classified as top notes tend to be fresh and sharp. Their lighter molecular structure means that their aroma will not linger as long on the skin, and with time they will give way to the middle notes.
Top Notes of our Natural Perfumes:
Allure – Bergamot
Lavender Magnolia – Bergamot, Lemon
Rose Bergamot – Bergamot
Shine – Tangerine, Lemon Myrtle
Vanilla Sandalwood – Magnolia
XOXO – Ginger
Middle notes, or heart notes, will make its presence known as the top note fades. These full-bodied notes make up the heart of a perfume and determine the more dominant aroma. The oils that are classified as middle notes tend to be well-rounded and pleasant. Their aroma will linger longer than the top notes before introducing the base notes.
Middle Notes of our Natural Perfumes:
Allure – Jasmine, Rose, Ylang Ylang, Cistus, Cinnamon Bark
Lavender Magnolia – Lavender
Rose Bergamot – Rose
Shine – Lavender, Melissa, Elemi
Vanilla Sandalwood – Myrrh
XOXO – Cardamom, Cinnamon, Clove, Jasmine, Damiana
Base Notes are those that linger longest on the skin after the other notes have faded. While the top and middle notes of the perfume are the most noticeable, the bottom notes are the underlying aroma throughout the wear of the perfume. The oils in this note classification tend to be deep and rich, and first appear once the top notes have dissipated.
Base Notes of our Natural Perfumes:
Allure – Patchouli, Vetiver, Sandalwood
Lavender Magnolia – Vanilla
Rose Bergamot – Patchouli
Shine – Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang, Osmanthus
Vanilla Sandalwood – Vanilla, Sandalwood
XOXO – Vanilla, Sandalwood
What does glycerin do in perfume?
Vegetable glycerin and oil will keep your body spray or perfume together. They will make the scent “stick” to your skin and make the scent to last longer on you. They will also moisturize the skin they fall on. If you add vegetable oil or glycerin to your fragrance, you will get moisturized, scented skin.
