What a calculator can and cannot do

A calculator applies a formula to the numbers you give it. That is all it does, and everything it produces follows from two things: the accuracy of your inputs and the appropriateness of the assumptions behind the formula.

Your inputs matter more than the tool. A cost of living figure estimated from memory will be optimistic. A fuel consumption figure taken from the manufacturer's brochure will understate what Nigerian traffic actually costs you. Wherever possible, use measured figures rather than remembered ones.

Assumptions are stated, not hidden. Every tool page sets out its method, its formula and a worked example. If an assumption does not fit your situation, you can see it and adjust for it. We would much rather you understood the calculation than trusted the number.

Rounding and edge cases. Results are rounded for readability and may differ slightly from a figure produced elsewhere. Institutions also differ in how they round, which band they apply and how they treat borderline cases. A CGPA at a classification boundary, or a taxable income at a band threshold, may be treated differently by the body that actually decides.

Reader submitted data

The figures in our data section are reported by readers. We review every submission for plausibility and reject implausible or identifying entries, but we do not and cannot verify any individual figure.

Please read it for what it is. It is not an official statistic, a valuation, an offer or a benchmark you can cite as authoritative. Our contributors are readers of this site and are not a representative sample of the country. Variation within a single city is frequently larger than variation between states. Where a location shows only a handful of entries, that figure tells you what those few people paid and nothing more, which is why we always publish the entry count and the range next to the median.

Every entry carries the month it was reported. In fast moving categories such as food and transport, an older figure is a historical record rather than a current price.

Accuracy and currency of information

We work hard to be accurate and we correct errors promptly when they are reported. We cannot guarantee that every figure on this site is complete, current or correct at the moment you read it. Laws change, institutions revise their policies, fee schedules are updated and prices move.

Every tool page shows the month it was last reviewed. Where you see a figure that matters to a decision, treat that date as part of the information and check the current position with the source.

If you find something wrong or out of date, please tell us. Reported errors go to the front of the queue, because other people are reading the same page while it is wrong.
