What this calculator does

There is no single JAMB aggregate formula in Nigeria, and that is the root of most of the confusion around this topic. Each institution decides how much weight to give the UTME, how much to give its own Post UTME screening, and whether O Level results contribute at all. One university divides the UTME by eight and adds a Post UTME score out of fifty. Another splits the two fifty fifty. A third brings O Level points into the mix.

Rather than pretend one formula fits everywhere, this calculator lets you enter the weighting your chosen institution actually publishes. You supply the UTME score, the Post UTME score along with its maximum mark, O Level points if they count, and the percentage weight attached to each. The tool converts everything to a common percentage basis and returns a clean aggregate out of 100.

That approach has a real advantage. When you are choosing between two institutions, you can run your same raw scores through both weightings and see which one treats your profile more kindly. A candidate with a modest UTME but an excellent Post UTME performance is far better off at a school that weights screening heavily.

How the calculation works

The calculator normalises every component before combining them, which is the step most manual attempts skip. Your UTME score is divided by 400 and expressed as a percentage. Your Post UTME score is divided by whatever maximum you tell it, which might be 50, 100 or anything else. O Level points are divided by their own maximum in the same way.

Each percentage is then multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights. If your weights add to exactly 100, this is a straightforward weighted average. If they add to something else, the tool normalises proportionally so the aggregate still reads out of 100 rather than producing a misleading number.

The reason normalisation matters is scale. A Post UTME score of 45 out of 50 is excellent. The same 45 out of 100 is mediocre. Adding raw marks without accounting for the maximum quietly punishes candidates from institutions that mark out of a smaller total.

The formula

Component percentage = (Your score ÷ Maximum possible score) × 100

Aggregate = (UTME% × UTME weight + Post UTME% × Post UTME weight + O Level% × O Level weight) ÷ Sum of all weights

A worked example

A candidate scores 268 in the UTME and 62 out of 100 in a Post UTME screening at a school that weights the two equally.

The UTME converts to 268 divided by 400, which is 67 per cent. The Post UTME is already out of 100, so it stays at 62 per cent. With a 50 / 50 weighting the aggregate is 67 times 50 plus 62 times 50, divided by 100, giving 64.50.

Now run the same candidate through a school using 60 / 40 in favour of the UTME. The aggregate becomes 67 times 60 plus 62 times 40, divided by 100, which is 65.00. A small difference here, but for a candidate whose UTME and Post UTME performances diverge sharply, the same comparison can swing several points and decide which application is worth prioritising.

Things worth knowing

Find the real formula first

Before you calculate anything, find the admission bulletin or screening guidelines for the specific institution and the specific year. Formulas change. A weighting that was published three admission cycles ago may no longer be in use, and social media summaries of it are frequently wrong.

Cut off marks are not fixed

A cut off is the score of the last candidate admitted, which depends on how many people applied and how well they did. It is discovered after the fact, not announced in advance. Last year's figure is a rough guide and nothing more.

Catchment and quota change the maths

Federal universities admit under merit, catchment area and educationally less developed state quotas. Two candidates with identical aggregates can receive different outcomes depending on state of origin. No aggregate calculator can model this, so read the admission policy alongside your score.

Compare courses, not just schools

Within one university, Medicine, Law and Computer Science routinely demand far higher aggregates than less subscribed courses in the same faculty. Running your score against a realistic second choice is often more useful than running it against your first.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding a raw UTME score to a raw Post UTME score without converting either to a common basis.
  • Using a formula found on social media rather than the institution's own published guidelines.
  • Entering a Post UTME maximum of 100 when the screening was actually marked out of 50.
  • Treating last year's departmental cut off as a guaranteed threshold for this year.
  • Ignoring O Level points at a school where they carry real weight in the aggregate.
  • Forgetting that some institutions deduct points for sitting O Level more than once.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common JAMB aggregate formula?
A 50 / 50 split between UTME and Post UTME is the most widespread pattern, usually expressed as UTME divided by 8 to give a score out of 50, plus a Post UTME score out of 50. That said, enough institutions deviate that you should never assume it applies to yours without checking.
Do O Level results count towards the aggregate?
At some institutions yes, at many others no. Where they count, each grade carries points under a published scheme, often A1 equals 6 down to C6 equals 1. Set the O Level weight to zero if your school does not use them.
Is a higher aggregate always better?
Within a single course at a single institution, yes. Across institutions the numbers are not comparable, because a 70 under one weighting represents a different performance from a 70 under another. Compare your position relative to each school's own cut off, never the raw aggregates side by side.
What aggregate do I need for Medicine?
Competitive medical programmes in Nigeria typically sit well above 70 and frequently above 75, but the figure moves every year with applicant numbers. Check the most recent published departmental cut off for the specific school and treat it as indicative.
Can I calculate my aggregate before Post UTME?
You can model it. Set the Post UTME weight to zero to see where your UTME alone places you, then enter a range of realistic screening scores to see how much ground each one gains or loses. That is a sensible way to decide how much preparation the screening deserves.
My weights do not add to 100. Is the result still valid?
The tool normalises them proportionally so the aggregate still reads out of 100. It remains internally consistent, but weights that do not sum to 100 usually mean a component has been misread, so it is worth checking the source again.
