What this calculator does
Most revision plans fail for the same reason: they are built on intention rather than arithmetic. A student looks at a syllabus, feels the weight of it, decides to read hard, and then discovers in week three that there were never enough hours in the first place.
This planner starts from the numbers. Give it your exam date, how many topics you still have to cover, roughly how long each topic takes you, and how many hours you can genuinely put in on a normal day. It works out how many real study days you have after rest days, how many hours that gives you, and whether it is enough. If it is not enough, it tells you exactly how short you are and what your options are.
It also reserves a slice of time for revision and past questions rather than assuming that reading a topic once is the same as knowing it. That reservation is the difference between covering a syllabus and being ready to sit an exam.
How the calculation works
The planner starts by counting the calendar days between today and your exam. It then removes rest days at the rate you specify, because a plan with no rest built in is a plan you will abandon. What is left is your real study days.
Multiplying those study days by your daily hours gives you the hours actually available. Separately, multiplying your remaining topics by the hours each topic takes gives you the learning hours needed, and a further percentage is added on top for revision and past question practice.
Comparing the two totals gives you the answer. If available hours exceed required hours, you have margin. If they fall short, the planner tells you the size of the gap in both total hours and extra hours per day, which is the form in which the problem is actually solvable.
The formula
Study days = Days until exam − (Weeks until exam × Rest days per week)
Hours available = Study days × Hours per day
Hours required = (Topics × Hours per topic) × (1 + Revision percentage)
Daily target = Hours required ÷ Study days
A worked example
A student has 42 days until her first paper, 34 topics left to cover, needs about 1.5 hours per topic, can manage 4 hours on a study day, takes one rest day a week and wants a quarter of her time set aside for revision.
Forty two days minus six rest days leaves 36 study days, giving 144 available hours. Her 34 topics at 1.5 hours each come to 51 learning hours, plus 12.75 revision hours, for a requirement of about 64 hours. She needs roughly 1.8 hours a day and has 4 available.
That surplus is genuinely good news, but the right response is not to study less. It is to raise the hours per topic, because 1.5 hours is thin for anything technical, and to spend the extra time on past questions under timed conditions. A comfortable plan with weak preparation still produces a weak result.
Things worth knowing
Estimate hours per topic honestly
The single biggest source of error in any revision plan is underestimating how long a topic takes. Time yourself properly on one topic before you build the plan, and use that real figure rather than the one you wish were true.
Rest days protect the plan
A schedule with seven study days a week looks impressive and collapses within ten days. One genuine rest day makes the other six sustainable, and sustainability is what actually gets a syllabus covered.
Past questions are not optional
Reading a topic teaches recognition. Answering questions on it under time pressure teaches recall and pacing, which is what the exam actually tests. The revision percentage in this planner exists to protect that time from being eaten by fresh reading.
Cut scope on purpose
When the hours do not fit, deliberately dropping the three lowest weighted topics is a strategy. Running out of time and missing whatever happens to be last on your list is not. Rank topics by marks available before you start, not in the final week.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Planning around the hours you wish you had rather than the hours you actually get after lectures, commuting and family obligations.
- Counting the exam day itself as a study day.
- Setting hours per topic from your strongest subject and applying it to your weakest.
- Leaving no time at all for past questions, then meeting the exam format for the first time in the hall.
- Building one plan for all your papers when the first and last exams are two weeks apart.
- Rebuilding the plan every time you fall behind instead of adjusting scope once and sticking to it.
