Avoiding Remote Work Scams

As remote work demand has grown, so has the volume of scams targeting job seekers. A few consistent red flags can save you significant time, money, and stress.

Red flags to watch for

• You're asked to pay for training, equipment, or "registration" before you've even been formally hired.
• The interview happens entirely over chat with no video call, ever.
• Salary sounds far above market rate for minimal stated qualifications.
• You're asked to deposit or forward money "for taxes" or "processing."
• The company has no verifiable website, LinkedIn presence, or online reviews.

How to verify an offer

Search the company name plus "scam" or "reviews." Check whether the person interviewing you has a real, established LinkedIn profile matching the company. Ask for the offer in writing on official letterhead or via a company email domain — not a generic Gmail address.

Protect your personal information

Never share bank details, ID documents, or sensitive personal data before a formal, written offer. Legitimate companies don't need your bank PIN or full ID scans just to "process an application."

If something feels rushed or too good to be true, slow down and verify. A legitimate employer will never penalize you for asking reasonable questions before committing.
