How to Negotiate Your Starting Salary

Many candidates accept the first number offered simply because negotiating feels uncomfortable — but a respectful, well-prepared negotiation rarely damages an offer, and often improves it.

Do your research before the conversation

Know the realistic market range for the role, location, and your experience level before you're asked for a number. Going in with data makes the conversation collaborative rather than confrontational.

Let them name a number first if possible

Where the process allows, let the employer share their range before stating yours — it avoids anchoring yourself unnecessarily low, especially in markets where compensation isn't standardized.

Frame the ask around value, not need

  • "Based on my experience with X and the market range for this role, I was expecting closer to Y" lands better than framing it purely around personal financial need.
  • If the base salary has a firm ceiling, ask about other levers: signing bonus, review timeline, remote flexibility, or professional development budget.

Get the final offer in writing

Once you reach agreement verbally, always request written confirmation before resigning from a current role or declining other offers.

A calm, well-prepared negotiation conversation — even a short one — is one of the highest-return conversations you'll have in your career. Most employers expect it and won't rescind an offer simply because you asked.
