Surviving a Panel Interview: One Reader's Story

Panel interviews can feel intimidating simply because of the format — multiple people, multiple perspectives, and pressure to address everyone, not just the one person asking the question.

Walking in

There were three interviewers: a hiring manager, someone from HR, and a future teammate. I hadn't been told the format in advance, so my first few minutes were spent adjusting rather than actually answering well — I'd recommend always asking recruiters about the interview format ahead of time.

What worked

  • Making eye contact with whoever asked the question, but briefly including the others as I answered, rather than only looking at one person the entire time.
  • Taking a short pause before answering harder questions instead of rushing — it came across as thoughtful rather than slow.
  • Directing a clarifying follow-up question back to the panel when a question was ambiguous, rather than guessing at what they meant.

What I'd change

I let the HR representative's more behavioral questions catch me off guard, since I'd mostly prepared for technical questions from the hiring manager. Preparing across all likely interviewer types, not just the one you expect to be toughest, is worth the extra effort.

Panels feel harder than one-on-one interviews mainly because of unfamiliarity with the format — a bit of preparation on structure alone makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
