What this calculator does

Data is one of the largest recurring costs in a Nigerian household after rent, food and transport, and it is the one people understand least. Bundles expire, usage counters are checked after the money is gone, and nobody can quite explain where fifteen gigabytes went in nine days.

This calculator builds an estimate from your habits rather than your bill. Tell it how much video you watch and at what quality, how long you spend scrolling, how much music you stream, how long your video calls run, how much general browsing you do, and how much you download in a month. It returns a monthly total, a breakdown showing which activity dominates, and a suggested bundle size with a little headroom.

The breakdown is usually the revelation. For most people, one activity accounts for over half the total, and it is almost always video, either watched deliberately or played automatically inside a social feed.

How the calculation works

Every online activity consumes data at a fairly predictable rate. Video is the heaviest by a wide margin and scales sharply with quality: roughly 0.3 GB an hour at 240p, 0.7 GB at 480p, 1.5 GB at 720p and around 3 GB at 1080p. Each quality step roughly doubles consumption.

Social media feeds sit at about 0.5 GB an hour when autoplay video is on, which is the default in most apps. Music streaming is far lighter at roughly 0.075 GB an hour. Video calls run about 1.2 GB an hour. General browsing, email and text messaging come to around 0.08 GB an hour.

The calculator multiplies each activity by its rate, scales daily figures to a month at 30.4 days, adds one off downloads, and then suggests a bundle about fifteen per cent above the estimate. That headroom matters because a bundle that runs out two days early tends to be replaced with a small top up at a much worse price per gigabyte.

A worked example

Somebody watches an hour and a half of video a day at 480p, scrolls social media for two hours, streams an hour of music, spends thirty minutes on video calls, browses for three hours and downloads about 4 GB of updates a month.

Video comes to 1.5 times 0.7 times 30.4, which is 31.9 GB. Social media is 2 times 0.5 times 30.4, or 30.4 GB. Music adds 2.3 GB, video calls 9.1 GB, browsing 7.3 GB, and downloads 4 GB. The total is about 85 GB a month.

Video and social media together account for 73 per cent of that. Turning off autoplay in social apps, which typically halves the feed figure, would save around 15 GB. Dropping video from 480p to 240p on a phone would save another 18 GB. Two settings changes, no change in behaviour, and roughly a third of the bill.

Things worth knowing

Turn off autoplay first

Videos that play automatically as you scroll are consumed whether or not you wanted them. Disabling autoplay, or restricting it to Wi Fi, is the single highest return setting change available on most phones and costs you nothing in experience.

Quality steps double the cost

On a phone screen the difference between 480p and 720p is marginal, and the data cost is more than double. Set a default quality in your video apps rather than letting them choose based on connection speed.

Buy bigger bundles per gigabyte

Larger bundles almost always cost less per gigabyte than small ones, and much less than emergency top ups. Work out your real monthly need, then buy a size that covers it rather than repeatedly patching a shortfall at the worst rate.

Watch background consumption

App updates, cloud photo backup and system updates can consume several gigabytes without any deliberate action. Restrict all three to Wi Fi in your phone settings, and check which apps have background data enabled.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Estimating video hours from memory rather than checking the screen time report on your phone.
  • Forgetting that social media feeds play video automatically, which makes scrolling far heavier than it feels.
  • Ignoring app and system updates, which can quietly consume several gigabytes a month.
  • Buying a bundle with no headroom, then topping up at a much higher price per gigabyte.
  • Assuming a bundle that expires monthly rolls over unused data. Most do not.
  • Leaving cloud photo and video backup running on mobile data.

How much data does an hour of video use?
Roughly 0.3 GB at 240p, 0.7 GB at 480p, 1.5 GB at 720p and about 3 GB at 1080p. Each step up in quality roughly doubles consumption, which is why quality settings matter more than watch time for most people.
Why does my data finish faster than I expect?
Usually background activity. App updates, cloud backup, autoplay video in feeds and system updates all consume data without any deliberate action. Check your phone data usage screen to see which apps are actually responsible.
How much data do I need per month?
That depends entirely on your habits, which is what this calculator estimates. Light users who mainly message and browse may need under 5 GB. Heavy video users can exceed 100 GB. Run your own figures rather than relying on a general recommendation.
Does WhatsApp use much data?
Text messages use very little. Voice notes and photos use more, and video calls are among the heaviest activities on any phone at roughly 1.2 GB an hour. The automatic media download setting is worth turning off if you are in many active groups.
Is it cheaper to buy a bigger bundle?
Almost always on a per gigabyte basis. The mistake is buying more than you need and letting it expire unused. Estimate your real monthly consumption first, then buy the smallest bundle that comfortably covers it.
