What this calculator does

Internet packages are sold by speed, but the speed you need depends entirely on what happens in your home at the busiest moment of the day, not on how many people live there.

A household of one person streaming in 4K needs more bandwidth than a household of four people reading email. This calculator works from activities rather than headcount. Tell it how many video streams, video calls, browsing sessions, gaming sessions and background downloads run simultaneously at your peak, and it returns the bandwidth that workload needs plus sensible headroom.

If you enter your current speed, it also tells you whether your package is the actual constraint. Frequently it is not, and the real problem is Wi Fi coverage or an ageing router, in which case upgrading the package changes nothing except the bill.

How the calculation works

Each activity has a typical bandwidth requirement. Standard definition streaming needs about 3 Mbps, HD about 6, and 4K around 25. An HD video call needs roughly 4 Mbps in each direction. Browsing and email need about 2 Mbps per person. Online gaming needs modest bandwidth, around 4 Mbps, though it is far more sensitive to latency than to raw speed. A large background download will take whatever is available, and around 10 Mbps is a reasonable allowance.

The calculator adds up everything running at the same time, which is the key point. Bandwidth is shared, so simultaneous activities compete. Then it adds thirty per cent headroom, because a connection running at its exact limit performs badly, and because advertised speeds are maximums rather than guarantees.

One thing the calculation cannot capture is latency. For video calls and gaming, a stable connection with low latency outperforms a faster but erratic one, and no speed figure reflects that.

The formula

Peak demand = sum of the bandwidth needed by every activity running simultaneously

A worked example

A household has two HD streams running, two people on HD video calls for work, three people browsing, and one large download in the background.

That is 12 Mbps for the streams, 8 for the calls, 6 for browsing and 10 for the download, giving 36 Mbps at peak. Adding thirty per cent headroom suggests a package of about 47 Mbps, so a 50 Mbps service fits well.

If the household currently has 20 Mbps, they are 16 Mbps short at peak, which explains precisely why video calls stutter whenever someone starts streaming. If they already have 100 Mbps and still see problems, the package is not the constraint and the investigation should move to Wi Fi coverage, router age and how many devices are connected.

Things worth knowing

Simultaneous use is what matters

Bandwidth is shared, so the figure that matters is what runs at the same time during your busiest hour. A household of six who never overlap needs less than a household of two who always do.

Wi Fi is often the real limit

A fast package cannot fix weak Wi Fi. Distance from the router, walls, interference and an old router all reduce what reaches a device. Test speed with a cable connected directly to the router before concluding that the package is too slow.

Upload speed matters for calls

Many packages advertise a high download speed with a much lower upload speed. Video calls, cloud backup and sending large files all depend on upload. If you work from home, check the upload figure before signing up.

Stability beats raw speed

For calls and gaming, a consistent 10 Mbps performs better than an erratic 50. Latency and packet loss are not captured by any speed number, and they are usually what people are actually complaining about.

Frequently asked questions

What internet speed do I need to work from home?
For one person doing video calls and normal office work, roughly 10 to 15 Mbps with a decent upload speed is generally adequate. Add more for each additional simultaneous user and for any streaming happening alongside.
Why is my internet slow when the package is fast?
The most common causes are Wi Fi coverage, an old or overloaded router, too many connected devices, and limits at the remote server. Test with a wired connection to the router to separate the package from the home network.
How much speed does 4K streaming need?
About 25 Mbps for a single stream. Two simultaneous 4K streams need roughly 50 Mbps before anything else in the household is accounted for.
Is upload speed as important as download?
For general browsing and streaming, no. For video calls, cloud backup, sending large files and anything involving live broadcast, upload speed is the constraint that matters most and it is frequently much lower than the advertised download figure.
Do more devices slow the connection?
Only when they are actively transferring data. A dozen idle phones consume almost nothing. Four devices streaming simultaneously consume a great deal. Background updates and cloud backup are the usual invisible culprits.
