What this calculator does

Nigeria uses metric officially, but imperial units persist everywhere in practice. Land is sold in plots and acres, height is quoted in feet, television screens are measured in inches, and recipes from overseas arrive in cups and ounces.

This converter handles the six categories that come up most: length, weight, volume, area, temperature and speed. Enter an amount and a unit, and it shows the equivalent in every other unit in that category at once, so you do not have to run a second conversion to get the one you actually wanted.

Temperature is handled separately because it is the one category that does not convert by simple multiplication. The scales have different zero points as well as different step sizes, which is why the formula has an addition in it.

How the calculation works

Every unit in a category is defined by how many base units it represents. For length the base is the metre, so a kilometre is 1,000 and a foot is 0.3048. Converting means multiplying your input by its factor to reach the base, then dividing by the factor of every other unit.

This two step approach is why the tool can show all conversions simultaneously rather than one pair at a time, and it is why adding a new unit only requires knowing its relationship to the base.

Temperature breaks the pattern. Celsius to Fahrenheit multiplies by nine fifths and adds thirty two, because the two scales place their zero points differently. Kelvin shares the Celsius step size but starts at absolute zero, so the conversion is a simple addition of 273.15.

The formula

General conversion = (Value × Factor of the source unit) ÷ Factor of the target unit

Celsius to Fahrenheit = (C × 9 ÷ 5) + 32

Fahrenheit to Celsius = (F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9

Celsius to Kelvin = C + 273.15

A worked example

A plot of land is described as 1.5 acres. Converting to the base unit gives 1.5 times 4,046.86, which is 6,070.3 square metres. Dividing by 10,000 gives 0.607 hectares, and the same figure divided by 0.092903 gives 65,340 square feet.

All three describe the same piece of land, and which one is useful depends entirely on who you are talking to. An estate agent may quote square metres, a land document may use acres, and a builder may work in square feet.

For temperature, an oven recipe calling for 350 degrees Fahrenheit converts as 350 minus 32, times five ninths, which is 176.7 degrees Celsius. In practice you would set 180, which is the nearest standard oven marking.

Things worth knowing

US and imperial volumes differ

A US gallon is about 3.79 litres while an imperial gallon is about 4.55, a difference of twenty per cent. Cups, pints and quarts differ too. Check which system a recipe or specification uses before converting.

Land measures vary locally

A plot in Nigeria is not a fixed standard unit and its size varies by state and by custom, commonly falling between 450 and 650 square metres. Always confirm the actual square metre figure on the survey document rather than relying on the word plot.

Watch precision in conversion

Rounding at an intermediate step compounds into a visible error by the end, particularly with area and volume where the factor is squared or cubed. Convert once from the original figure rather than converting a converted number.

Minus forty is the meeting point

Celsius and Fahrenheit read the same value at minus forty degrees. It is a useful check: if a conversion you have done by hand does not behave sensibly around that point, the formula has been applied the wrong way round.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Converting US and imperial volume measures as though they were identical.
  • Applying a length factor to an area, when the factor needs to be squared.
  • Rounding at intermediate steps and compounding the error.
  • Reversing the temperature formula, so multiplying before subtracting rather than after.
  • Assuming a plot of land is a standard measurement with a fixed size.

Because area is length multiplied by length. If one metre is 3.281 feet, one square metre is 3.281 squared, which is 10.76 square feet. Using the linear factor for area is a common and large error.
