What this calculator does

Knowing how long something will take to read is the difference between a realistic study plan and a hopeful one. A four hundred page textbook is not a weekend. A twelve thousand word report is not a lunch break if you actually have to understand it.

This calculator converts a word count or page count into a realistic time, adjusted for how fast you read and how demanding the material is. That second adjustment is the one most estimates skip, and it is the one that makes the difference. Dense technical material takes roughly half your normal effective speed, and anything requiring notes and rereading can take considerably less.

Add the minutes you can realistically read each day and it also tells you how many days the whole thing will take, which is the number you actually need when you are planning around a deadline.

How the calculation works

If you enter pages rather than words, the calculator first converts using a words per page figure you can set. This matters because page density varies enormously: a paperback novel page carries around 250 to 300 words, while a densely set academic page can carry 500 or more.

Your reading speed is then divided by a difficulty factor. Light material such as fiction or news reads slightly faster than your baseline. General non fiction reads at baseline. Technical and academic material reads at roughly two thirds of it, and material requiring notes and rereading at under half.

Dividing the word count by that adjusted speed gives the reading time. Speaking time is calculated separately at about 140 words a minute, which is a realistic pace for a presentation or a recording.

The formula

Words = Pages × Words per page, when working from a page count

Effective reading speed = Your reading speed ÷ Difficulty factor

Reading time in minutes = Words ÷ Effective reading speed

Speaking time = Words ÷ 140

Days to finish = Reading time ÷ Minutes available per day

A worked example

A student has a 340 page textbook to get through before an exam. At 450 words a page that is 153,000 words. She reads at about 230 words a minute, but the material is technical, so her effective speed is around 153 words a minute.

That gives 1,000 minutes, which is nearly 17 hours of pure reading. At 45 minutes a day she needs 23 days, or a little over three weeks, and that is before any time spent making notes or working through problems.

If her exam is in twelve days, the plan does not fit, and knowing that now allows her to do something about it: prioritise chapters by likely marks, increase the daily time, or accept that she will cover seventy per cent thoroughly rather than a hundred per cent badly. All three are better than discovering the shortfall in the final week.

Things worth knowing

Adjust for difficulty honestly

The most common planning error is applying a novel reading speed to a textbook. Technical material reads at roughly two thirds of your normal pace, and anything requiring notes at under half. Setting this correctly is what makes the estimate worth having.

Reading is not studying

Getting through the words is one part of the task. Notes, practice questions and revision take additional time, often as much again. Use this figure as the reading component of a plan, not the whole plan.

Measure your own speed

Time yourself reading one page of the actual material, count the words, and calculate your own figure. Real reading speeds vary widely between individuals and between subjects, and a measured number beats an assumed one every time.

Use it for presentations too

A fifteen minute slot is about 2,100 words at a natural speaking pace. Writing a script and checking it against that figure prevents the most common presentation failure, which is running out of time with three slides left.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying a light reading speed to dense technical material.
  • Using a generic words per page figure when the actual pages are much denser.
  • Forgetting that note taking and revision take time on top of reading.
  • Planning around calendar days rather than the days you can actually read.
  • Assuming the speed you read your phone on is the speed you read a textbook.
